Taare Zamin Par

Yesterday, we watched one of the lovliest of films - Taare Zamin Par. A very novel theme - and, an extremely important and relevant one in today's world - and carefully done film.

As the tag line of the film says, the story conveys the wonderful message of 'Every Child is Special'. Terrific performance by everyone in the film and extremely natural. It is about the problem of this child with learning disability - But, as much it is about the insensitivity / selfishness of adults (parents); narrow considerations of the teachers and the general competitiveness in our society. From the animations in the title, it will look like it is for children. But, it is a must-see for parents and teachers, I would say.

Many people have written to blogs and magazines that they will start respecting their children a bit more after seeing the film. Great !

Tremendous hardwork has been put in by the film team, I read. When there are so many scenes with children and in the class room, not even one child was conscious of the camera in the entire film and you could not spot even one little one looking at the camera. Congrats to the film team.

And, what a song - the 'Thuje Patha Hai Mom !'. And, a breathtaking climax.

Thanks to Aamir Khan and the entire team.

Yes, I too think it was quite brilliant.
Made me think a lot about my own situation in school. Have to admit it gave me more patience with some of the more difficult kids! I try not to get frustrated with kids who don't believe in the concept of homework at all, and just hope they have something in their lives that they are passionate about.
The only thing it that the message that comes across is that all dyslexic kids are special in some other way and will have some hidden talent like painting etc. This I don't think is true though. There are some such kids that are not really exceptional in any field.
The issue is what to do with such kids. As a teacher I feel it is my responsibility to get the idea of (say) long division across. So I spend a lot of time with the weaker kids to make sure they don't fall behind. I spend a lot of time trying different things with them - like timed running races in maths class to understand speed, distance and time. But then the problem is that in my two term of maths teaching I have not really progressed with the text book or syllabus. But I think I got a few important concepts across well. This may seem like a good thing and I shouldn't bother too much about the prescribed syllabus and all that, but then long division alone won't help them pass their exams. And I really don't know what to do about this..
